METZ, review of their album Up on Gravity Hill (2024)

Four long years have passed since the previous album METZ. Alex Edkins, main composer of the trio, has had time to release his own estimable solo album (which apparently will have continuity), to release his most melodically inspired side.

It is a therapy that seems to have had an effect, because their fifth LP delves into the findings that already opened new horizons in their previous work. We are facing the brightest version of an unclassifiable band that, let's not fool ourselves, maintains the abrasive electric intensity as a watchword, but nuanced now from the wonderful cover: a rose that suggests an almost romantic approach, which crystallizes in the fabulous final piece , the single "Light Your Way Home": The closest they've come to their own version of shoegaze. As tender as intense.

The group thus avoids the dead end they could have reached, balancing the songs and, by extension, the LP itself, whose eight cuts they structure successfully. As soon as they start, they resume the obsessive kraut that gave them such good results on their previous album with "No Reservation/Love Comes Crashing". They also dare to flirt with noise psychedelia through the tremendous "Superior Mirage", with their kaleidoscopic guitars.

And even if you cut like "Glass Eye"with their dizzying post-punk guitars, prove how good they still are in their primary version, it is in the melodic power that emerges from the fabulous chorus of "Never Still Again" (their best song?) where they surpass themselves. If it is love that has brought her here, it is further proof of her power to tame beasts, bringing out the best version of her.
